Question sitting vs. lying in savasana

Is it possible to get a really good relaxation from sitting up with legs crossed at the end of the class rather than lying down in savasana? I often feel that I'd like to stay sitting but feel a bit odd as everyone else is lying and my teacher doesn't really give us the option? Can your body still get the benefits by just sitting? It is about being still at the end of the class or is the lying down that gives the benefits?
