Default Namaste definition

Namaste everyone. This may seem a funny question, but what does namaste actually mean? We always say it at the end of class and I think it means thank you - is that right?

Default Namaste

Hi Lizzy,

my teacher translates Namaste as "I acknowledge the Divine in you and me'.

This is what the yogajournal.com says:
The gesture Namaste represents the belief that there is a Divine spark within each of us that is located in the heart chakra. The gesture is an acknowledgment of the soul in one by the soul in another. "Nama" means bow, "as" means I, and "te" means you. Therefore, Namaste literally means "bow me you" or "I bow to you."

Namaste.
Viparita

That's lovely Viparita.

I have also heard it mean....

'I honour the place within you, where the universe resides, in love, in peace, in truth. For if you are in that place in you, and I am in that place in me, there is only one of us.' Namaste.
