Question chants

We do a chant in sanskrit to open and close each class but my teacher never gives a translation of what it means which really annoys me. When I ask him he doesn't give me a clear answer it's always really vague which really annoys me.

If a teacher is saying a chant then surely they need to give a translation otherwise, well for me anyway, it feels a bit fake. What do you think? Do you think you need to know what you are chanting or are you just happy to say the sanskrit words?
