Default Yoga pigeon pose

Hi everyone - a question about pigeon pose.

How is the knee supposed to be in this pose (apart from sore - sorry I find this pose agony!!!). In fact, now that I think about it everything hurts in this pose. My teacher says to relax into it, but it is impossible - how??? Is that how it is supposed to be until you get more flexible (I'm a long way from it).

Any help to make it easier would be welcome - thanks!

Hi Nyan,
I'm new here too!. Did you ever try using props in this pose? Its very helpful. You can use a folded blanket or block under your hip of your bent leg so you are positioned upright and your hips are even. also don't force your bent leg. Ideally and eventually it will come like any other asana and your knee and foot will lie straight across in front of you. I hope it helps..good luck and remember to practice ahimsa( non harming) so be gentle with yourself in this asana and you will become relaxed I promise!

Namaste,

Thanks Dace Yoga for this, I struggle with this pose too. Sometimes the studio that I go to doesn't have props, so I was wondering if you had any tips for this? Is it OK just to be leaning on the bent leg?

I use a yoga block for this pose - I put it under the hip / thigh area of my bent leg and helps to take a bit of the pain away - yes I am not into this pose either - ugh! Relaxing is just not possible for me!!! Maybe if anyone has any thoughts on this?

Hi Michy,
I would recommend you bringing a hand towel so you can prop up your hip. Leaning on your bent leg is preventing you from experiencing the benefits of this pose. to relax yourself more is turn your attention to your breathe whenever possible it really does help!

Hi all - thanks for this advice, I'll try it with a blanket as you suggest - anything that helps will be great!

...and I'll try and remember to breathe! Ahhhhhhhh!!!
