Default Hip socket clicks during yoga

My hip socket clicks - it's not only a really horrible noise but it feels funny too . It's only in certain poses (sorry I don't know the name)...when you lie on your back with your legs straight up in the air and then you have to lower them to the floor slowly. Is there something wrong, or will it just get better as I get more flexible?

Hi Ferny - this is a difficult question to answer, only you know how it feels in your body. Trust youself - you are your own best teacher. If it feels OK when it clicks it probably is! If it hurts I'd suggest backing off from yoga for a while and finding a good physiotherapist to work with, who can help to sort it out.

Hi Ferny. I know what you are talking about . I have found that it is very important for me to really warm up all the joints (including the hips) at the beginning of my practice to prevent or at least to lessen the clicking. I highly recommend so called Pawanmuktasana series which is a sequence of very simple exercises that open up all the major joints and relaxe the muscles of the body. The book Asana Pranayama Mudra Bandha by Swami Satyananda Saraswati has an excellent description of the whole series.

Great idea Viparita - I agree the Pawanmuktasana series is excellent to help warm up the joints and muscles before you practice.
