Default Embarrassing Bikram yoga problem - help!

Hi everyone, it's great to find this forum and I've been really interested in reading everyone's comments.

I have a problem and I'm glad I can talk about it on here where no one knows me . I've just started doing bikram and it's so great to finally find something physical that I like to do you have no idea how hard that has been for me but I find that my sweating really smells bad (really bad) and I'm so embarressed that I don't want to go back.

I dont' know what I'm goind to do. It's OK for men to smell, but not women Any tips of what someone like me should do about this, it really is a problem.

I would think it has to be something you need to work out of your system.

certain foods and drinks actually get into the blood stream, like onions and garlic and alchohol other things. then it goes from your blood to your lungs, where it causes bad breath, and to your sweat.

i would wathch what I ate and drank - if you can smell it on your breath the smell is probably actually originating in the blood vessels in your lungs.

I also make sure I driink enough water to keep my, uh, urine clean and pure. if it is real yellow or if it stinks, it's becuase you have too much carbs and not enough water.

my urine is now generally as pure as water, or so it seems... and my sweat is the same way.

oh yeah - if you stop eating meat it really helps too.

Hey Johnny,
How did get so smart? Probably from Yoga huh?. I love your analogy, makes perfect sense to me. You are a true yogi.....totally in tune with your body Are you a yoga teacher and if so what are you certified in?

I'm in Ct. It seems as though there are a lot of people from Australia on this site. Technology is truly amazing, isn't it?

Hey Joss, You are also a true yogi, because the first real sign is awareness bravo Don't give up I would do as Johnny suggest and if after time it doesn't disappear, see a doctor. However, Do you shower before yoga class? You actually should. Mr. Iyenger says to practice in purity, so you start fresh and sweat clean sweat. Thats practicing saucha the fourth yama. I know I have a better practice, so I always shower before , you'll feel better too. Try it!

Namaste~

Hey Joss, you are brave and so well done to you for sharing and trying to find an answer to this as opposed to not doing anything and not doing bikram!

I can honestly say that the more I go (and sweat) the more I feel like my body purifies. Yes, drink more and look at what you eat, but I'd just keep going to bikram and sweating it out. Once you've got the toxins out of your system the smell should go.

ding ding ding ding!! looks like we have another winner at the yogatalk forum.

....................

hi Joss, yes i agree that awareness is key...you know they say, knowing you have a problem is a problem half-solved. i'm talking from experience of telling a friend about his extreme odour -- he didn't speak to me for many months after.

like me, you probably have more sweat-glands than the average. however, i was recently told that all sweat is actually odourless upon exit, but immediately bacteria get at it and start feasting, and that creates the smell. the smell of what you eat.

so, along with a less aromatic diet (have you tried japanese cooking: lots of rice and tofu and miso soup -- mmmmm), you can make your local bacteria as homeless as possible. wear fresh clothes every day, shave armpit hair. also, you could get to yoga early and shower thoroughly before the session.

there's also a number of medical solutions and treatments, even surgery. so you may have to 'fess up face-to-face with your doctor (who surely knows anyway).

whatever you do, don't let it stop you doing what you love. please let us know how you get on.

WOW I just can't believe this, thank you everyone I feel really touched by your support and advice from people I don't even know, thank you so much everyone .

I am feeling a bit calmer about this reading your thoughts on what to do, and it seems like I guess this is something that can change coz for a while there I was really worried that this might be it! I do always wear clean clothes and I shower, but your food thoughts are interesting (although I'm not sure how I'm going to go without eating meat!!)

A friend of mine was talking about botox (apparently they can inject it into armpits to stop the smell), but I'm sure sure that I'm brave enough. Not very yoga but I wondered if anyone else has heard this?

Best and thanks again everyone.

coincidentally....at a friend's place last night, i saw a few mintues of GNTM (that's Germany's Next Top Model -- isn't Heidi irritating?). one of the models has small scars around her upper body from surgery for her 'hyperhydrosis' (that's excess sweating).

yeah, it's cool being able to have cyber conversations with people from all over the world. I marval at the knowledge available to me, even here in Kentucky... traditionally not exactly one of the world's most forward-thinking places, I guess you would say.

I don't know that I'm 'smart' though, but your compliments totally flatter me so thanks I'm not certified. you want to certify me in something?

I just do a lot of yoga and read a little.

and I like finding situations that intimidate me, and facing them head on. that's always cool and teaches me a lot

I can't say I like facing things head on, however, thats the only way to break through the barriers. Sometimes I have complete confidence in myself and then other times I have none, so I am doing more things out of my comfort zone to face my fears

Namaste~

I believe the Buddhist, among other, believe that you'll keep coming back... over and over and over and over again.... until you have learned to conquer all your fears.... and, therefore, have no more fears.
